Jyoti Behura
Founder & CEO
Dr. Behura obtained his PhD in Geophysics from Colorado School of Mines after his undergraduate studies (BS+MS) at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. After attaining his doctoral degree, he joined BP America Inc in their Advanced Seismic Imaging team. After a few fruitful years there, he moved back to Colorado School of Mines as a research scholar for pursuing research activities. In 2014, he left Mines to establish a start-up — Seismic Science LLC, to develop and commercialize products addressing some of the most challenging problems in subsurface imaging.
Although his training has been in geophysics, he believes he is an engineer at heart. His research revolves around wave propagation, inverse methods, imaging, AI, and data processing in general. He is currently exploring applications in multiple sectors — oil & gas, geothermal, healthcare, and defense. He is also an avid programmer and enjoys cranking up the GPUs.
His R&D activities have led to multiple peer-reviewed publications and imaging technologies. He has written one award-winning paper in Geophysics and has been recognized on multiple occasions for his achievements, including being awarded the J. Clarence Karcher Award by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2012 for his “significant contributions to the science and technology of exploration geophysics as author and researcher.” At Seismic Science LLC, he has developed acoustic and elastic full-waveform inversion algorithms, which has till-date been applied to hydraulic fracture imaging for oil & gas industry clients and to imaging Mount St. Helens’ magmatic system (funded by the National Science Foundation).
